In light of the earthquakes in Haiti, Learning from Catastrophes: Strategies for Reaction and Response, the new book edited by Howard Kunreuther and Michael Useem and published by Wharton School Publishing, has even more relevance. Michael Useem believes that leadership, at its essence, is the act of making a difference, especially when the stakes are high - be they personal, professional, or organizational. By examining what others have done when a company, a life, or even the fate of a nation was on the line, Useem shows us what works and what fails, what hastens a cause or subverts a purpose, and what must be done when we have to decide and perform under great duress.

About the Author

Michael Useem is William and Jacalyn Egan Professor of Management and director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
