A Q&A with Henry Mintzberg, Author of Bust Those Management Myths

Management icon Henry Mintzberg dismantles ten dangerous business myths in an essential guide for thoughtful leaders.

Henry Mintzberg, legendary management thinker and recipient of the Thinkers50 Lifetime Achievement Award, has spent decades challenging conventional wisdom about how organizations work. In this powerful distillation of his life’s work, Mintzberg tackles the most persistent and damaging myths in business—from “if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it” to the blind worship of “strategic planning.”

With characteristic wit and clarity, Mintzberg offers refreshing alternatives that will transform how you think about leadership, structure, and organizational effectiveness. He replaces tired maxims like “managing is controlling” with more nuanced approaches that embrace “controlled disorder” and suggests that “ordinary creativity” often matters more than exceptional genius.

Drawing from his extensive body of work across sixty years, Mintzberg provides a masterclass in critical thinking for anyone who leads teams or organizations. His irreverent style makes complex ideas accessible without sacrificing depth, making this book as intellectually stimulating as it is practically valuable.

Whether you’re a seasoned executive, an aspiring manager, or a student of organizational behavior, this concise volume will challenge your assumptions and provide a clear-eyed framework for more effective, humane management.

Mintzberg recently took time to answer seven questions from Porchlight about the book

◊◊◊◊◊

Porchlight Book Company: Writing a book is no small undertaking. What compelled you to write this one?

Henry Mintzberg: Both an editor and I felt that it was time to draw together what I have written about management and organizations over my career.

PBC: What is one unanswered question you encountered as you wrote the book that you are most interested in answering now?

HM: Why have we become so obsessed with analysis and measurement while eschewing experience and judgment.

PBC: If there is only one thing a reader takes away from reading this book, what would you hope it to be?

HM: As a manager, get out of your office, get on the ground, and find out what's going on.

PBC: One of the great things about books is that they tend to lead readers to other books. What book[s] related to this topic would you recommend people read after (or perhaps even before) reading your book?

HM: John Raulston Saul's Voltaire's Bastards.

PBC: What is your favorite book?

HM: I can't say that I have one, but for its sheer construction and articulation, Jeremy Eichler's Time's Echo would be up there.

PBC: What are you reading now?

HM: Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, by Vincent Lam.

PBC: Do you have any future projects in the works that we can look forward to?

HM: Glad you asked! I am completing a pamphlet entitled For the Sake Of Survival.*
