John Robert Baker, Jr. was shot down in early March 1944 during a bombing raid over German-occupied France and was entered into Stalag Luft I at Barth, Germany on 8 March 1944. He spent approximately 13 months before the Soviet Army liberated the camp in May 1945. The American POWs were airlifted to France on 13 - 15 May 1945.
