Remembering Michael Hammer

By 800-CEO-READ

If the book of the 80's was In Search of Excellence by Peters and Waterman, then book of the 90's was Reengineering the Corporation by Michael Hammer and Jim Champy. We were saddened to hear Michael Hammer died this week at age 60. The best way we can think of to acknowledge his impact is by announcing the inclusion of Reengineering The Corporation in our upcoming book. READ FULL DESCRIPTION

If you are a baseball fan, or even just a fan of great writing, I highly recommend you check out Michael Lewis's recent article for Vanity Fair about sports agent Gus Dominguez, who has been convicted (wrongly, Lewis believes) of smuggling Cuban baseball players to the United States. In it, he follows the story back to Cuba and paints a fascinating portrait of baseball there. Peter Gammons recently stated on Baseball Tonight that the most exciting baseball experience of his life was watching a game in Havana, and you can almost taste that kind of excitement in this piece by Lewis. Our 2010 Retrospective

By Sally Haldorson

2010 was, for 800-CEO-READ, a year of stability, growth and redesign. Some highlights and happenings from 2010: January: We celebrated the winners of the annual 800-CEO-READ business book awards and other industry folks at a party in NYC. READ FULL DESCRIPTION

About The Author

Jack Covert will tell you he is a simple merchant at heart; his old employees will tell you he was the heart of the company he built until his retirement in 2014. Hired by the late David Schwartz thirty years ago to sell business and computer books to the Milwaukee business community in the Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, Jack grew that 3-shelf business section into the specialty bulk book retailer Porchlight is today. As Founder and former President, Jack still offers his guidance and hard-won business acumen to all of us at Porchlight. When he’s not consulting with us, volunteering in the community, or puttering around his garden, Jack can usually be found at home watching British mystery series with his wife Ann and their two cats.

When she can find the time, she reads, writes, reviews, and edits alongside the company’s marketing team. Helping craft three editions of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time utilized both skill sets. Outside of work, she is most likely to be hitting a tennis ball around or hanging out with her boys (husband, child, dog) at home.
