Our 2010 Retrospective

By Sally Haldorson

2010 was, for 800-CEO-READ, a year of stability, growth and redesign. Not everyone nor every company is so lucky as to say the same about the past year, but after the chaos, both internally and externally, of 2008-09, we count ourselves lucky that we close the year in a celebratory mood. Some highlights and happenings from 2010: January: We celebrated the winners of the annual 800-CEO-READ business book awards and other industry folks at a party in NYC. READ FULL DESCRIPTION

We've been talking about how to help people, how to focus on what's positive and helpful in the current state of our world, rather than grumbling over the things that are both out of our control and truly uncertain. Warren Bennis | 1925-2014

By 800-CEO-READ

Aaron updated us last Wednesday with some dispatches we've received from a new generation of Authors On the Road, Changing the World. It is great to hear from the folks we're working with, to watch them spreading their ideas and expertise, and see them slowly and deliberately effect real change as they do. But, we know they're standing on the shoulders of giants, and as this new generation of authors and educators strengthens and broadens the scope of the business book genre, we have been losing some of those giants—the first generation of business book writers, the ones that blazed the trail, that made the study of business, management, and leadership an educational pursuit rather than a purely profit-based one. Thousands of business books are published every year-- Here are the best of the best After years of reading, evaluating, and selling business books, Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten are among the most respected experts on the category. Now they have chosen and reviewed the one hundred best business titles of all time--the ones that deliver the biggest payoff for today's busy readers. The 100 Best Business Books of All Time puts each book in context so that readers can quickly find solutions to the problems they face, such as how best to spend The First 90 Days in a new job or how to take their company from Good to Great. Many of the choices are surprising--you'll find reviews of Moneyball and Orbiting the Giant Hairball, but not Jack Welch's memoir. At the end of each review, Jack and Todd direct readers to other books both inside and outside The 100 Best. And sprinkled throughout are sidebars taking the reader beyond business books, suggesting movies, novels, and even children's books that offer equally relevant insights. This guide will appeal to anyone, from entry-level to CEO, who wants to cut through the clutter and discover the brilliant books that are truly worth their investment of time and money.

About The Author

Jack Covert will tell you he is a simple merchant at heart; his old employees will tell you he was the heart of the company he built until his retirement in 2014. Hired by the late David Schwartz thirty years ago to sell business and computer books to the Milwaukee business community in the Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, Jack grew that 3-shelf business section into the specialty bulk book retailer Porchlight is today. As Founder and former President, Jack still offers his guidance and hard-won business acumen to all of us at Porchlight. When he’s not consulting with us, volunteering in the community, or puttering around his garden, Jack can usually be found at home watching British mystery series with his wife Ann and their two cats.

When she can find the time, she reads, writes, reviews, and edits alongside the company’s marketing team. Helping craft three editions of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time utilized both skill sets. Outside of work, she is most likely to be hitting a tennis ball around or hanging out with her boys (husband, child, dog) at home.
